George Washington Bacon (1830–1922)〔(A list and brief history of London Atlases. ) Bruce Hunt, maps.thehunthouse. Retrieved 23 September 2014.〕 was an American mapmaker and publisher who from the 1870s developed a successful business in producing maps of London. Bacon operated as G.W. Bacon & Co. of 127 Strand, London, from 1870. He based his atlases on the plates used by Edward Weller for his ''Weekly Dispatch Atlas''. In 1893, he bought the map business of J. Wyld. Around 1900, his firm was purchased by the Scottish publishing house of W.& A.K. Johnston and incorporated into their own. Maps using the Bacon brand were being produced as late as 1956.〔(Bacon's Large Print Map of London and Suburbs. by Bacon, George Washington. ) Sanders of Oxford.
